Maziwe Island is a unique attraction located in the Indian Ocean near Pangani, in the Tanga region of Tanzania. It is a beautiful area characterized by bright white sand and clear turquoise waters surrounding it, making it an ideal place for relaxation, swimming, and enjoying the stunning coastal scenery.

Briefly, in its history, Maziwe was once a fully formed island covered with natural vegetation, including mangrove trees as well as large coastal trees such as mivinje and other species, and it served as a habitat for various seabirds. The island played an important role in the local ecosystem, providing shelter and breeding grounds for different forms of marine and bird life. However, from around the mid-20th century, environmental changes such as rising sea levels, coastal erosion, and strong ocean currents and winds gradually reduced the island’s size. By the end of the century, much of its land had disappeared, leaving behind a sandbank (fungu) in the middle of the ocean.

The name “Lost Island” comes from this transformation—reflecting how it changed from a fully established island with rich natural life into a unique feature with a very different appearance from its past.

Today, Maziwe Island remains a popular destination for tourists and nature lovers, offering a peaceful environment, close interaction with the ocean, and breathtaking views of Tanzania’s coastline.
